Rene Bouvier - Cote de Nuits
The traditional landscape of Burgundy is being challenged by several up and coming winemakers and Bernard Bouvier is without question one of the region's top new voices. The Bouvier family has been entrenched in Burgundy’s Cote de Nuits for four generations and has always been considered one of the region’s top names. Bernard began managing the domaine in 2004 and although he is only in his mid-30’s, his early vintages already show the very best of what his family's fantastic properties can offer. Our endless pursuit of finding the most dramatic examples of Burgundy's terroir has given us a great opportunity to work closely with Bernard as he has honed his skills and become one of the leading authorities on the appellations of Marsannay, Gevrey Chambertin, and Fixin.
Experiencing a Bouvier wine is a pleasure like no other. A visit to the domaine shows a commitment to excellence that most producers only dream of achieving, with every effort being made to make wines that achieve depth and style while still clearly expressing terroir. Bernard is a great proponent of biodynamic farming and cultivates their precious 42 acres as naturally as possible. Over 30% of the domaine's vines are 50+ years old, a tremendous feat considering the difficult task of maintaining healthy vines in Burgundy once they reach 30 years of age. Every vintage is harvested and sorted by hand to ensure only the finest fruit makes it into the finished wines. While it depends on the character of the vintage, the reds usually see 12-18 months in the barrel with up to a third of the barrels being new while his whites are always barrel aged to some degree. Much of the domaine’s fresh and terroir-driven character can be attributed to a limited use of sulfur in the vineyard and never filtering the wines prior to bottling.
As a company we are committed to sourcing the finest examples of small-production Burgundy made and look forward to continuing a bright future with Domaine Bouvier. If you have been lucky enough to experience a wine from this producer that we have imported, we are sure you share a similar feeling!
